Police in Utah were investigating a shooting at Saturday's "No Kings" protest that left one person critically injured, reports KSL. However, police in Salt Lake City say it's too early to say whether the shooting was politically motivated. A man taken into custody is the suspected shooter, and he was also the lone person injured by gunfire, reports the AP. Police took two others into custody and continue to try to sort out what happened.
The shooter appeared to be walking alongside thousands of protesters who were demonstrating against policies of the Trump administration, said Police Chief Brian Redd. (Similar marches took place in cities across the US.) Whether he was there in support of the protests was unclear. Either way, authorities condemned the violence:
- "The purpose of today's demonstration was a powerful and peaceful expression until this event, and that cannot be overshadowed or silenced by a single act meant to harm," said Mayor Erin Mendenhall. "I want to urge everyone in the public to be calm, to give one another grace and to look out for one another tonight in the coming days."
