The Minnesota state senator and his wife who were shot multiple times at close range on Saturday are both out of surgery, and their family is hopeful they will survive, reports KARE11. The outlet spoke to Matt Oleg, a nephew of lawmaker John Hoffman, 60, and wife Yvette, and he credits Yvette with saving the life of the couple's daughter. All three were home when a gunman disguised as a police officer came to their residence in the early hours of Saturday.

  • "The daughter Hope, who I believe is in her mid-20s, was at home with her parents, and Yvette threw herself on top of her daughter," said KARE's AJ Lagoe, relaying what Oleg told him, per People.

  • The nephew said Hope was not struck by gunfire, though each of her parents was hit multiple times. The bullets appear to have missed vital organs, however, he added. Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz described himself as "cautiously optimistic" the Hoffmans would survive.
  • Police say the same shooter fatally shot and killed another state lawmaker, Melissa Hortman, and her husband, Mark, at their nearby residence. A manhunt for the shooter continued on Sunday morning.
