Goodwill from the franchise's first playoff appearance last spring couldn't save Atlanta Thrashers coach Bob Hartley, fired today after the team began the NHL season 0-6. "We just couldn't let it go any further," general manager Don Waddell said of an ugly start which saw the Thrashers outscored 27-9 and left them as the only league team without a point.

Hartley, who led Colorado to the 2001 Stanley Cup, took over during the 2002-03 and compiled a 136-123-32 record. No replacement was immediately named, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported, with assistant coach Brad McCrimmon directing today's practice. "It's an uncomfortable situation," Thrashers captain Bobby Holik said. "It's not Bob's fault, it's everybody's fault." (More Bob Hartley stories.)
