Stephen Griffiths—described as a "lizard-loving loner" by neighbors—was often seen strolling around the red-light district he lived in wearing a long black coat and sometimes boasted that was doing a doctorate "in Jack the Ripper," according to the Bradford Telegraph and Argus.
