The instant replay-expecting public is ready for baseball to get out of the Stone Age, says LA Times columnist Bill Dwyre, following veteran umpire Tim McClelland's controversial call at home plate in Monday's Rockies-Padres game. It sent Colorado into the playoffs and raised pressure for MLB to utilize the instant replay.
"Can't baseball see the light and have big brother watching over it, just like it watches over most other sports now?" says Dwyre, arguing that the MLB should join the NFL, college football and professional tennis in using instant replay cameras to get it right. Baseball's VP for umpiring maintains that instant replay plans remain at the discussion level. (More MLB stories.)
