Terry Ryan, the second most senior general manager in Major League Baseball, has announced that he will step down at the end of this season. The man who led the Minnesota Twins through tough times in the 1990s into playoff contention in recent years will cede responsibility to his longtime assistant, Bill Smith, writes the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

The announcement, which surprised some staff members and players, will result in considerable reshuffling fof the Twins' front office. Ryan let his emotions show as he discussed his eagerness to return to the field and focus on scouting. Ryan, 53, is apparently delighted to be getting out from "behind that desk," leaving tasks like negotiations to Smith. (More Terry Ryan stories.)
