Police say a 29-year-old Massachusetts man used a skateboard to fatally beat his 90-year-old grandmother in the Hudson home they shared. Prosecutors allege Devin Dube attacked his sister with a skateboard on Tuesday afternoon, prompting a 911 call, then turned on his grandmother, identified as Elaine Dube, reports NBC News. A second call from inside the house reported that she, too, had been assaulted. She later died at UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester. Authorities say Dube's father and sister were also struck but were treated and released.
Police found Dube in a van at a nearby property and arrested him for murder and assault without incident. Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said Dube had prior run-ins with law enforcement but "never behavior of this level." Court records cited by NBC Boston describe earlier incidents involving threats, a violated restraining order, and alleged racist outbursts at a skate park. A court psychologist has diagnosed Dube with schizophrenia and said he doesn't consistently take his medication, officials noted.
Police stressed that the violence was confined to the family home and that there's no ongoing threat to the public. Dube, who's being held without bail, is due back in court April 17 for a probable cause hearing. "She was very open, very, always a bright spirit," a neighbor says of Elaine Dube, per WCVB. "She certainly didn't deserve to go like that, you know?"
