Three police officers were killed and two critically injured in a shooting in southern Pennsylvania Wednesday. "This is an absolutely tragic and devastating day for York County and the entire Commonwealth of Pennsylvania," Gov. Josh Shapiro said at a news conference. Sources tell NBC News that the officers were serving a warrant when they were fired upon. State Police Col. Christopher Paris said the suspect, initially reported to have died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, was killed by law enforcement, PennLive reports.
Authorities said the shooting erupted in the area of North Codorus Township, about 115 miles west of Philadelphia. KDKA describes the scene as "a rural road that winds through an agricultural area not far from the Maryland state line." "There are simply no words I can offer to assuage the grief that this community has experienced," Paris said. He said the two surviving officers are stable but hospitalized in critical condition.
Attorney General Pamela Bondi called the violence against police "a scourge on our society," the AP reports. She said federal agents were on the scene to support local officers. In his remarks Wednesday, Shapiro referred to the death of an officer in a hospital siege in the same county earlier this year. "We need to help the people who think that picking up a gun, picking up a weapon, is the answer to resolving disputes," the governor said.
