Trump to Christie: Maybe We'll Look Into Bridgegate Again

Remember Bridgegate? President Trump does, and he's threatening to reopen an investigation into the infamous traffic-jam scandal that dogged the administration of former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie. The president issued the threat after Christie, another ally-turned-critic, criticized Trump over the weekend on TV, reports USA Today.

• What Christie said: Among other things, he accused Trump of politicizing the Justice Department by going after critics such as John Bolton. "You were told that this was what he was going to do," Christie said on ABC's This Week. "And not by me, by Donald Trump during the 2024 campaign. He told you he was going to do this—that he was going to have a Justice Department that acted as his personal legal representation, and that is what they're doing."

• Trump threat: "Can anyone believe anything that Sloppy Chris says?" he asked on Truth Social, before bringing up Bridgegate. "Chris refused to take responsibility for these criminal acts," he wrote. "For the sake of JUSTICE, perhaps we should start looking at that very serious situation again? NO ONE IS ABOVE THE LAW!"
• The scandal: Two top Christie aides were convicted for orchestrating gridlock on the George Washington Bridge as political payback for a Democratic mayor. Christie himself was never charged. The Supreme Court eventually overturned the convictions, saying the scheme did not violate federal law.
• An irony: When the convictions were overturned in 2020, both Christie and Trump praised the development—and both accused the Obama administration of politicizing the Justice Department, notes the Hill.
