The teen suspected of fatally stabbing another teen at a Texas high school track meet has been indicted on a first-degree murder charge. The grand jury handed up the indictment Tuesday, the Dallas News reports. Karmelo Anthony, now 18, was 17 when he allegedly stabbed Austin Metcalf, also 17, at a Frisco track meet in April. Under the Texas criminal justice system, 17-year-olds are considered adults, People reports. Anthony's attorney says the indictment is an "an expected and routine step in the legal process" and that he believes once "all of the facts are presented and the full story is heard, the jury will reach the right conclusion and justice will be done."
No trial has yet been set, and the county district attorney says the indictment simply allows the case to move "formally into the court system." Per an arrest warrant affidavit, Anthony was waiting out a weather delay under a tent intended for students from Metcalf's high school, and Metcalf asked him to move. Anthony allegedly told Metcalf to "touch me and see what happens," which Metcalf allegedly did. Anthony then allegedly told Metcalf to "punch me and see what happens," after which Metcalf allegedly grabbed him and asked him again to move. That's when Anthony allegedly stabbed Metcalf in the chest. Anthony allegedly told responding police officers that he was protecting himself. (More Texas stories.)
