The gunman shot dead after opening fire outside a suburban Detroit church on Sunday has been identified as a 31-year-old man who occasionally attended services there with his mother. More:

  • "The suspect's mother is a member of the church, in which he has attended church services two or three times over the course of the last year," Wayne Police say, per NBC News.
  • Brian Anthony Browning of Romulus had no prior contact with police but "may have been suffering a mental health crisis," authorities say.
  • He was allegedly wearing a tactical vest and camouflage gear and carrying an AR-15-style assault rifle, a semi-automatic handgun, and hundreds of rounds of ammunition when he began firing shots outside CrossPointe Community Church around 11am, as 150 people were worshipping inside.

  • A livestream video shows people ducking for cover and running out of the sanctuary. Authorities note the building's front doors were locked and a security team was stationed outside.
  • One security guard was shot twice in the leg but was in stable condition after successful surgery. A member of the church who saw the shooter as he was arriving ran him over with his vehicle, Senior Pastor Bobby Kelly Jr. tells Detroit News. At least two security officials then shot the suspect, who died at the scene, per the AP.
  • Those "heroic" actions "undoubtedly saved many lives and prevented a large-scale mass shooting," says Police Chief Ryan Strong, noting more guns and ammunition were found during a search of Browning's home. Kelly says bullets entered the church, but no one else was injured.
