Food connoisseurs looking to score bragging rights may have to plan a trip to Lima, Peru. The 2025 version of the "World's Best 50 Restaurants" list has the city's Maido as No. 1. There, chef Mitsuharu Tsumura "has helped redefine the centuries-old Japanese-Peruvian culinary tradition for a modern fine-dining audience," writes Julia Moskin in the New York Times. The top 10:

  1. Maido, Lima, Peru
  2. Asador Etxebarri, Atxondo, Spain
  3. Quintonil, Mexico City
  4. Diverxo, Madrid, Spain
  5. Alchemist, Copenhagen, Denmark
  6. Gaggan, Bangkok, Thailand
  7. Sézanne, Tokyo, Japan
  8. Table by Bruno Verjus, Paris, France
  9. Kjolle, Lima, Peru
  10. Don Julio, Buenos Aires, Argentina

  • In the US: Only one American restaurant makes the list of 50, notes Eater. That would be Atomix of New York City, which comes in at No. 12. However, the list excludes restaurants once they hit No. 1, including Eleven Madison Park in New York City and the French Laundry in California's Napa Valley.
  • Context: The Times notes that this particular list is somewhat controversial in the restaurant world because it allows voters to accept free meals, and its supposedly anonymous voters are often well-known.
