R. Kelly was rushed to the hospital last week for an alleged overdose, which his lawyers are blaming on prison staff. The disgraced singer's legal team says Kelly overdosed on medication given to him by prison officials. The claim comes a week after lawyers filed an emergency motion seeking Kelly's release to home confinement, claiming officials at the Federal Correctional Institution in Butner, North Carolina, had pressured other inmates to kill him. In a new filing, Kelly's lawyers say their client was placed in solitary confinement "against his will" on June 10, not long after the emergency motion was filed, per USA Today. Two days later, prison officials gave him an "overdose quantity" of anxiety and sleep medication, according to the document.
Kelly woke up feeling "dizzy" on Friday morning, "tried to get up, but fell to the ground," then "crawled to the door of the cell and lost consciousness," the filing reads, per the New York Post. It says he was taken by ambulance to Duke University Hospital but removed two days later against medical advice as he was set to receive surgery on a blood clot issue, which would've required a two-week hospital stay. His "life is in jeopardy right now because the Bureau of Prisons denied him necessary surgery to clear clots from his lungs," his lawyers claim. "He could die from this condition, and they are letting it happen." The Bureau of Prisons declined to comment on "pending litigation."
