Taylor Swift's new album, Midnights, is making headlines not only for its "darker" and "more experimental" sound—it's also smashing sales records. Billboard cites data from Luminate that finds the 32-year-old singer's 10th original studio album sold more than 800,000 copies in the US on its first day of release on Oct. 21, across all platforms (read: vinyl, CD, cassette, and digital downloads). That makes it the biggest-selling album of 2022 so far, shoving aside Harry Styles' Harry's House, which had sold 620,000 copies through Oct. 13. Swift also picked up the honor of largest sales week for any album in the US since 2017, with the person claiming that year's achievement being ... Swift herself, with her reputation selling more than 1.2 million copies in its first week.
Breaking it down further, Swift also surpassed records in the vinyl and streaming genres. In the former, Midnights achieved record single-week sales, with more than 400,000 copies sold as of the latest data. And Swift broke not one, but two streaming records: Midnights achieved most-streamed album in one day on Spotify, while Swift herself became the most-streamed artist in a single day on the platform, reports Mashable.
Everyone is waiting with bated breath to see how Midnights fares on the Billboard 200 chart when it debuts there on Nov. 4. If it hits the No. 1 spot, it will be Swift's 11th time there. Swift herself responded to the streaming news on Friday. "How did I get this lucky, having you guys out here doing something this mind blowing?!" she tweeted. "Like what even just happened??!?!"
