A jokey tradition turned tragic when a 60-year-old woman died during a dessert-eating contest to celebrate Australia Day. The woman was eating lamingtons—a sponge cake topped with chocolate and coconut—when she appeared to have a seizure, reports the BBC. People at the Hervey Bay hotel in Queensland performed CPR, but the woman died at the hospital, per 9News. Such eating competitions are a staple of Australia Day, a national holiday that marks the arrival of the first Europeans to the continent. The hotel offered its condolences in a Facebook post and thanked those who'd tried to save the woman. (A similar tragedy took place in California last year.)
