The British government no longer has to worry about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle causing a diplomatic incident by inviting the Obamas to their wedding and snubbing President Trump, because the number of politicians invited to the upcoming royal wedding is zero. Kensington Palace says people close to the couple will be invited to the May 19 wedding, but political leaders, including British ones, are not on the guest list, the New York Times reports. "It has been decided that an official list of political leaders—both UK and international—is not required" for the wedding, the palace said in a statement. "Her Majesty's Government was consulted on this decision, which was taken by the Royal Household."
Palace sources say the decision was made because Harry is not a direct heir to the throne—and the church where the wedding will be held only seats around 600 people. The prince is friendly with Barack Obama, and there had been worries about friction amid rumors that the government was pressuring him to invite Trump to the wedding instead. Officials say some 1,200 members of the public will be invited to Windsor Castle to celebrate the wedding. The guests, including a 12-year-old girl injured in the bombing of an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester last year, were chosen by officials after the couple asked for guests from a variety of backgrounds, the BBC reports.
