President Trump drew boos from Democrats Tuesday in his State of the Union address as he discussed his immigration proposals. The jeers came as Trump talked about trying to end "chain migration." The president complained that "under the current broken system, a single immigrant can bring in virtually unlimited numbers of distant relatives," per USA Today. "Under our plan, we focus on the immediate family by limiting sponsorships to spouses and minor children." Trump also called for ending the visa lottery system, which "randomly hands out green cards without any regard for skill, merit, or the safety of our people." Conservative Michelle Malkin tweeted that Democrats were "hissing and booing like Oberlin undergrads."
As the Los Angeles Times notes, "chain migration" has long been an issue for Trump. After last year's attack in New York City in which a driver plowed through people in a bike lane, Trump claimed that the alleged driver brought in more than 20 relatives through the system. "CHAIN MIGRATION must end now!" he tweeted at the time. "Some people come in, and they bring their whole family with them, who can be truly evil." (More State of the Union address stories.)
