Hack of Democratic Emails Worse Than Thought

The high-profile hacking of Democratic emails already has caused much trouble for the party—including the resignation of Democratic National Committee chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz. But as the New York Times reports, things might soon get worse for Democrats, because the hack has turned out to be much bigger than first thought. For one thing, the hackers appear to have gotten into the private accounts of staffers, not just their official ones. (Michael Isikoff at Yahoo had reported a related scoop last month.)

And they hit not only the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and the DNC, but groups such as the Democratic Governors' Association as well. The upshot: Expect another damaging dump by WikiLeaks in the near future. (The first one revealed that top DNC officials were working against the Bernie Sanders campaign.) The FBI has widened its investigation, with most officials still blaming Russian hackers for the breach. (WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange suggested that a young DNC staffer was murdered over the leaked emails.)
