The FBI has thrown the brakes on a plan to return George Zimmerman's gun, asking Florida authorities to hold on to all evidence until it completes its civil rights investigation. "They have an investigation they are conducting," a Sanford police official tells USA Today. "Until that hold is lifted, the evidence will remain secured."
The courts released the trial's evidence, which also included things like Trayvon Martin's hoodie and the bag of Skittles he was carrying, to police earlier this week, the Orlando Sentinel reports; the items are now being held in a secure area. The hold clearly indicates that the Justice Department's investigation is active, notes the Sentinel; the probe began a year ago, but up until the end of the criminal trial, the DOJ had been relatively quiet on the subject.
