Squeaky-clean Reese Witherspoon found herself in a rare bit of trouble in the wee hours of Friday morning, reports Variety. The actress is in Atlanta shooting The Good Lie, and was a passenger in a car being driven by husband Jim Toth when the pair were pulled over after Toth reportedly veered into the wrong lane. He got out of the car to take a sobriety test (he blew a .139), and Witherspoon apparently got upset and was warned to stay in the car. Then things took a turn, per the police report as obtained by Variety. A sampling:
- "Mrs. Witherspoon began to hang out the window and say that she did not believe that I was a real police officer. I told Mrs. Witherspoon to sit on her butt and be quiet."
- After Toth was arrested, Witherspoon exited the car, and "stated that she was a 'US citizen' and that she was allowed to 'stand on American ground.'"
- The officer then moved to grab her arms and arrest her. Then "Mrs. Witherspoon asked, 'Do you know my name?' ... You’re about to find out who I am."
- Mrs. Witherspoon also stated, 'You are going to be on national news.' I advised Mrs. Witherspoon that was fine."
Toth faces a DUI charge; Witherspoon a disorderly conduct charge. The two were briefly jailed and released on bond around 3:30am.
Variety notes it's "unclear" how the arrests managed to stay under wraps this long. The two have an 8am court date tomorrow, but they're not expected to attend.
