Media | News of the World Eric Holder to Talk Phone Hacking With 9/11 Families US investigation gets serious By Kevin Spak Posted Jul 28, 2011 8:47 AM CDT Copied Copies of the last-ever News of The World newspaper are carried on a conveyor belt at the Newsprinters plant on July 9, 2011 in Waltham Cross, England. (Getty Images) The FBI's investigation into allegations that News of the World reporters hacked the phones of 9/11 victims must be heating up, because Attorney General Eric Holder himself will meet with families of the dead next month to discuss the probe's progress, the Guardian reports. A lawyer for 20 of the families says he’ll be taking as many of his clients as he can to the meeting in Washington on Aug. 24. “We are hoping the allegations of hacking prove to be untrue but we want a thorough investigation to determine what happened,” says the lawyer. If the allegations prove true, the families could file all sorts of lawsuits—even unsuccessful attempts to access voicemails could be punishable offenses.
